during the weeks in the run-up
to Celtic Manor and especially
during the final day when his
three-point lead going into the
singles was ebbing faster than
the waters flooding the Usk Val-
ley, to see that.
this was a man clearly and
very obviously totally haunted by
the thought of failure. It leaked
from him like the water from the
americans’ porous rain suits.

the possibility of defeat was
tantamount to the commitment
of a heinous crime.
there’s nothing wrong with
winning of course. everyone
wants to win. but does golf
really need the fist-pumping,
rabble rousing and thoroughly
tasteless histrionics of some
of the players (the europeans
particularly on this occasion) in
the name of winning a little gold

saved poor Hunter Mahan the
gauntlet of the media conference
when the poor chap was almost
in tears having blown it against
graeme Mcdowell in the final
singles and it would have saved
us the platitudinous insincerity
of the closing ceremony when
at least we were spared the old
cliché about the game of golf
being the real winner.
at the Millennium they could
have got a lot more fans in to
see all the action from a com-
fortable seat and when the rains
came down all they needed
to do was close the roof. the
americans wouldn’t have need-
ed basketball rain gear, those
who were interested could have
had fun and they could have
taken over the local branch of
tesco to sell the merchandise.
and the rest of us could have
got on with our regular $1 Nas-
sau and some real golf.
