Positioned adjacent to Western Gailes Golf Club
(venue for the Scottish Amateur in 2011), and over-
looking the Alisa Craig, the course will be built on
one of the last remaining links sites on the Ayrshire
coast. Construction is expected to begin next sum-
mer, with an opening hoped for in mid-2013.

As if playing Royal Dornoch wasn’t enough, you
can now once again sleep just steps from the first
tee. The Royal Golf Hotel, overlooking the par 4,
331-yarder, reopened this past summer. Each of the
22 rooms has undergone dramatic upgrades, but
what hasn’t changed are the memorable views of
the course and Dornoch Firth from many rooms.
Castle Stuart, the impressive work of Americans
Mark Parsinen and Gil Hanse, is wrapping up a
successful second full year of operation. Elsewhere
on the property, construction may begin soon on six
lodges. Future plans also call for a boutique hotel
and possibly a second 18-hole layout.

The biggest golf news in a town still recovering
from hosting The Open in July is that the green fee
for the Old Course was raised 10 pounds for 2011,
which means you will pay approximately
US$220 for the privilege of walking in the footsteps
of Louis Oosthuizen and friends during the peak
time of April 18th through October 16th. Green fees
for the New and Jubilee courses were also raised
slightly to remain half that of the Old Course. A
record number of advanced tee time applications
were received last month for the Old Course. Plans
continue for the imminent redevelopment of Hamilton Hall, located directly behind the 18th green
of the Old Course and now owned by Herb Kohler,
who has owned The Old Course Hotel since 2004.
Multiple bedroom apartments will be created, with
a potential opening date of summer 2012.

Two hours north of St. Andrews, Donald Trump’s
highly visible course project at Balmedie has begun
initial construction of infrastructure projects,
while just down the road, Royal Aberdeen will host
the 2011 Walker Cup September 10th and 11th. The
U.S. has won the last three competitions, defeating their fellow amateur counterparts from Great
Britain and Ireland.
