Tee for Two COn TInueD
take his game to the course mirrored his resistance to marriage 15 years after his divorce. And
there was the lovely Guy who said up front that
he was probably too old for me—he was—but at
least we had a nice time golfing.
I got a little carried away with a new Golfer Guy
who quickly won my affection, outfitting him with
a spare fairway wood and golf bag. He had moved
on to his next match by the time the shoes I’d or-
dered for him arrived. (I still haven’t learned how
to judge the level of a man’s commitment phobia
by his golf game.)
each outing, even the ones that didn’t go so
well, seemed like time well spent. My own char-
acter grew as I learned to enjoy the experience of
getting to know someone I might not see again, as
I began to understand the value of living the pres-
ent moment.
I think of that moment at the turn with MARYSDAD, when I thought, “I could go home and water
the plants or dust the shelves.” But I’d paid my
green fee and I’m a golf slut. On the back nine I
took in the scenery and the challenge, practiced
my game, made pleasant conversation. I even sat
down for the 19th hole that I knew would be my
last with this man and chatted with my sarcastic
and, it turned out, very unhappy partner, whose
wife had left him for another man just a year after
their daughter’s birth.
Then I shook his hand and went home to make
my next golf date. Clearly, I still had a few more
holes to play.
