SUMMER NOT IN THE CITY
As a kid, summer was that joyous period between school years when all sense of time was suspended and life was carefree. Though just
three months long, it felt like forever. I knew early on that I wanted to live
my whole life in an endless summer.
Back then, my family drove from our home in Los Angeles down to our
ranch in San Diego County and rode horses through winding canyons to
towns called Lilac and Fallbrook, played games with our friends in the
fields and haystacks, smudged the orange trees on freezing nights and
learned to care for and show our prize black angus at local fairs.
Nowadays, summer is more about squeezing long weekends into our
crazy schedules and hopefully finding an entire week to spend with kids
and family, playing a little golf, fly-fishing a river. Our two main features
this issue—“Perfect Companions: Great Places to Fly-Fish & Golf” (page 15)
and “The Lure of Northern Michigan” (page 19)—are precisely on the
theme of memorable summer getaways.
Fly-fishing aficionado and author Chris Santella, whose has written
several books on the subject, describes 10 ideal fly-fishing destinations
that are near or abut Troon golf courses. He takes us from well-known
spots such as the Deschutes River in central Oregon to experiences you
may not have considered, such as fly-fishing for mako sharks near San
Diego, California.
Veteran writer Norm Sinclair, meanwhile, leads us on a golf romp through
northern Michigan, starting with the course voted by readers of Golf World
as the number one public course in the country in 2010, Forest Dunes Golf
Club. While in the region, Sinclair advises us not to miss Boyne, Treetops
and the many other excellent courses and resorts to be found there.
After reading those stories, as well as Larry Berle’s “My Bucket List,”
wherein the author sets out on a decade-long odyssey to play all top 100
courses in the U.S., and amazingly accomplishes his task, I’m ready to
pack my bags and find some summer fun of my own...hope you are too!

In independent testing the Cleveland® Ultralite XL270™ driver proved longer
than the TaylorMade® R11™, Burner® SuperFast™ 2.0, Callaway® RAZR Hawk™
and Titleist® 910D2™. The reason the XL270 won the test is because it’s
so much lighter than the others, creating more clubhead speed resulting in
longer drives. If this isn’t convincing enough for you, go test an XL270 against
any other driver to experience the power of Ultralite technology for yourself.
SOME DRIVERS LOOK HIGH-TECH, SOME REALLY ARE.

*When we say leading drivers we simply mean that people buy their drivers because those big
marketing machines spend millions of dollars brainwashing people into thinking their drivers
are the best. After you see the independent test results you will know who the real leader is.
