San Diego
nothing but fun in the

Some golf courses are etched on the terrestrial version of a blank canvas. Golf course design as art? Indeed. Consider Maderas Golf Club
in the San Diego County burg of Poway. ¶ “You
have to think of the site as if looking down from
an airplane,” says co-designer Damian Pascuzzo.
“The land was tightly configured. We knew where
the entry would be. We knew where they wanted
to put the clubhouse. Then it was a matter of
working with the canyons. It was an exercise of
fitting the holes into the space and making them
work with the topography. This certainly wasn’t
an open, sandhills-like setting where you can run
the course out anywhere.”
